Reset, Recharge, and Restore
How taking just 10 minutes out of your day can change your life
In a recent interview for International Women’s Day, Michelle Obama was asked what her most effective daily habit is. She responded, “My number one daily habit is to give myself permission to be happy.”
We could all benefit from this daily ritual! We often become so busy that we forget to include ourselves in our day-to-day life! The truth is, giving yourself love has countless health benefits.
So what are some examples of self-love, and what are the direct benefits?
5 Examples of Self-love Practices
Tell yourself a daily mantra
Starting this ritual can be as simple as looking into the mirror and saying (or thinking) to yourself “I love you.” While this may take some time to get used to, you’ll eventually begin to feel more comfortable, and truly start believing it!
Do something that makes you happy
This can be anything that makes you smile, or maybe something you’re good at that makes you feel accomplished! Set an intention to do that something every day — Write a story, cook yourself a five-course meal, listen to your favourite album — whatever brings you joy. These positive vibrations will transfer to your emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being!
Clean out your closet
The idea of cleaning may stress you out initially, however getting rid of old, used personal items have positive benefits to mental health. A clean closet = a clean mind. In relieving yourself of old material possessions that may be linked to negative vibrations, you’ll make room in your life for the positive, and it’ll feel quite therapeutic!
Meditation can be an intimidating notion, but anyone can do it! All it takes is a few minutes to just be. First, find a comfortable position — sitting or laying on your back. With no distractions surrounding you, close your eyes and bring awareness to your breath — where it lies, how shallow or deep it is, etc. Begin to deepen the breath, inhaling from the base of your belly, moving up through the ribcage, and up into the lungs. Exhale to release in the opposite direction. Repeat this 5-10 times, continuing to lengthen the breath. That’s all it takes! You’ll immediately feel reconnected to your body and ready to continue your day with a clear mind.
Yoga is all about reconnecting your mind, body, and soul. Through connecting your breath with some simple poses, you’ll feel recharged, like someone hit your reset button! Whether you prefer a more restorative session or hot power yoga, you’ll surely feel those positive vibrations and your mind, body, and spirit will thank you for it! For a quick fix, lie on your back with your legs up the wall for a number of benefits, including improving circulation, reducing stress, alleviating insomnia, and relieving the lower back while stretching out the hamstrings!
Executing these daily practices have 3 main health benefits that can change your life for the better.
3 Health Benefits of Self-love
1. Stress Relief
Practicing any of these rituals will give you some time in the day to concentrate on yourself, and let go of your day, week, month, etc. In taking a few minutes out for your day to concentrate on a specific practice, you remove any space for those day-to-day worries, reducing any stress build-up.
2. Decreases your chances of life-threatening implications
From these practices, you’ll gain a higher self-esteem and sense of self-worth, which has been correlated with a higher vagal tone. This allows your body to better regulate blood glucose levels, which reduces your chance of developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and a stroke.
3. Improves your immune system
In giving yourself a chance to reset and recharge, your parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) will become activated. This means that while your mind and body rest, your immune system becomes active in building up its’ defense for any illnesses that come your way.
